We are proud to share that our new website, Mawkim.org, is now live.
In Mi’kmaw, mawkim means “to count and record.” For generations, our people have carried the responsibility of protecting stories, knowledge, and truths that shape who we are. This new site is another step forward in carrying that responsibility into the digital age—built to serve our communities with respect, transparency, and care.
At its heart, this launch is about community empowerment through data sovereignty. Guided by the OCAP® principles—Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession—Mawkim ensures that Mi’kmaq, and our partner First Nations across the region, continue to govern how our data is collected, used, protected, and shared.
Accessible Tools for Communities: A clear and user-friendly home for our surveys, applications, and resources—making it easier to participate in and benefit from our work.
Mi’kmaw Ethics Watch (MEW) Hub: A dedicated space to share protocols and guidance, ensuring that research involving Mi’kmaq is conducted ethically and in full respect of our culture and rights.
Data in Action: Infographics, highlights, and summaries that bring research findings back to the people—turning reports into tools for community decision-making, planning, and wellness.
Transparency & Trust: Secure document management, clear policies, and dedicated contact points for researchers, community members, and leadership.
This website is designed as more than a digital home. It is a gathering place: for surveyors in the field, for communities seeking answers, for researchers committed to respectful partnership, and for leaders charting the path ahead. It is a space that reflects our commitment to walk with our people in stewarding our data, protecting our stories, and shaping our future.
As First Nations leaders across the country have affirmed, nothing about us, without us. With this launch, Mawkim is better positioned to uphold that truth: that our communities hold the right—and the responsibility—to tell our own stories and safeguard our knowledge.
We invite you to explore, connect, and make use of the resources at www.mawkim.org. This site belongs to our communities. It is built for you, by you, and with you.
There is spirit in data. And with this launch, that spirit continues to guide us forward.
