All research involving collective Mi'kmaw knowledge, culture, arts, spirituality, or traditions, or having the potential to impact treaty or Aboriginal rights must be reviewed by Mi'kmaw Ethics Watch.
Does your research involve gathering knowledge or data from Mi'kmaw subjects in Mi'kma'ki?
All research that gathers Mi'kmaw perspectives, opinions, or knowledge as data - conversations, interviews, focus groups, talking circles, taped, virtual, or face-to-face) from Mi'kmaq or Mi'kmaw subjects conducted within Mi'kma'ki must be reviewed by Mi'kmaw Ethics Watch.
Are you a researcher who is partnered with or supervising a graduate student who is gathering data from Mi'kmaw subjects?
Researchers who are partnering with or supervising graduate students who are gathering data from Mi'kmaw subjects must complete an application for review with the Mi'kmaw Ethics Watch.
Does your research have the potential to impact treaty rights?
All research involving collective Mi'kmaw knowledge, culture, arts, spirituality, or traditions, or having the potential to impact treaty or Aboriginal rights must be reviewed by Mi'kmaw Ethics Watch.

Research Exemptions
All research involving collective Mi’kmaw knowledge, culture, arts, spirituality, or traditions, or having the potential to impact treaty or Aboriginal rights must be reviewed by Mi’kmaw Ethics Watch (MEW).
If your research falls outside of the purview of MEW and is exempt from review please complete the form below.
Exemption Categories
- Undergraduate Research: 1.1 Research at the undergraduate level (not including honours research) is exempt from review including course-based research projects. Student researchers may still require REB approval.
- Research in Preschool-12 Contexts: 2.1 Research for curriculum development by teachers is exempt from review.
- Research in Preschool-12 Contexts: 2.2 Student research projects are exempt from review.
- Research in Preschool-12 Contexts: 2.3 Research projects involving Preschool-12 students and their educators or families in formal educational contexts that do not deal with: collective Mi’kmaw knowledge, culture, arts, spirituality, or traditions, or have the potential to impact treaty or Aboriginal rights are exempt from review. Researchers must receive approval from the governing body of the school and their institutional REB
- Books and Manuscripts: 3.1 MEW does not review books or manuscripts (academic and general audience).
- Books and Manuscripts: 3.2 Research conducted for a book that does not deal with: collective Mi’kmaw knowledge, culture, arts, spirituality, or traditions, or has the potential to impact treaty or Aboriginal rights are exempt from review.
- Secondary Data: 4.1 MEW only reviews research projects that engage with human and animal subjects
- Secondary Data: 4.2 Research projects that do not engage directly with human or animal subjects are exempt from review. Although the validity of some secondary data may arise in research, this does not fall under MEW’s purview.
